Veneers or Bonding: How to Know Which One You Actually Need

Most patients come in having already decided they want veneers. Sometimes they're right. Sometimes bonding does the same job in a single appointment for a fraction of the cost, and nobody can tell the difference.
Both treatments fix the same kinds of problems: chips, gaps, discoloration, uneven edges, teeth that are slightly too small or the wrong shape. The difference is in how they do it and how long they last.
Composite bonding
Composite bonding is a direct procedure. Your clinician applies tooth-colored resin to the tooth, sculpts it by hand, and hardens it with a curing light. No removal of tooth structure, no lab work, no waiting. It's done in one visit and can look exceptional when the clinician doing it has a good eye. The tradeoff is longevity. Bonding typically lasts five to seven years before it needs touching up, and it's more susceptible to staining over time.
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are indirect restorations. They are custom-fabricated in a lab from ceramic, bonded to the front surface of the tooth, and last anywhere from 10 to 20 years with proper care. They resist staining better than composite and hold their appearance longer. The tradeoff is cost and the fact that a small amount of enamel needs to be removed to place them properly, which makes the process irreversible.
The right answer depends on a few things: how much you want to change, how many teeth are involved, your budget, and how long you want the result to last. A single chipped tooth on an otherwise healthy, well-aligned smile is often a bonding case. A full smile transformation involving six to ten teeth is usually a veneer case.
The worst outcome is getting veneers when bonding would have done the job, or getting bonding on a case that really needed veneers and being disappointed when it doesn't hold up the way you hoped.
The consultation exists precisely to sort this out. Come in, tell us what's bothering you, and we'll tell you honestly which treatment makes the most sense and why. No upselling. Just the right answer for your specific situation.
