What Nobody Tells You About Getting Dental Implants

The implant itself is not the complicated part. Most patients are surprised to hear that. They come in braced for the surgery and leave realizing the planning that went into it was what made it straightforward.

A dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone that acts as an artificial root. A custom crown is attached on top. When it's done well, it looks identical to the tooth next to it, functions the same way, and lasts decades. When it's done poorly, it fails. The difference almost always comes down to planning.

Before any implant is placed, we take a 3D scan of your jaw. This tells us exactly how much bone volume is available, where the nerves and sinus cavities sit, and what angle and depth gives the implant the best chance of integrating successfully. Skipping this step or substituting it with a standard X-ray is one of the most common reasons implants fail at other practices.

If there isn't enough bone where the implant needs to go, a bone graft is performed first. This sounds alarming to most patients. It's actually routine. We take bone material, place it in the area that needs building up, and allow it to integrate over several months before placing the implant. The timeline is longer, but the outcome is a stable foundation that holds up properly.

The implant itself is placed under local anesthesia. Most patients describe the experience as less uncomfortable than they expected. The healing period that follows, called osseointegration, takes three to six months as the bone fuses with the titanium post. During this time, a temporary restoration keeps the area looking and functioning normally.

The crown is placed once integration is confirmed. From there, the implant requires the same care as a natural tooth. Brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings. No adhesives, no removal, no special maintenance.

The full process takes time. But a tooth that lasts the rest of your life is worth the patience it takes to place it properly.
